The GA State Championship Road Races took place last weekend on the same course as last year - pretty hilly, definitely enough to break down the peloton. There is a hard climb right at the end as well.
The race was put on by Dingo Race Productions. Registration was a breeze, and we received two race numbers with "Georgia State Championships" printed on them. I always appreciate good race numbers. Pre registration numbers were pretty low, and there weren't all that many day of registrations. I'm not sure why. There are other races going on regionally, but I would rank them as lower in importance to this one. Perhaps racers didn't want to do a hilly course or didn't want to test their legs against racers fighting for the State Champion jersey.
The weather was hot and very humid. Masters racers who were finished for the day said it was a race that was decided by who ate and drank properly. I hydrated well for the days beforehand, and had an extra bottle on the line that I finished off before the race started. Otherwise I only had two insulated bottles with ice water.
The race was good and hard. A break of 2 got away early with one of my teammates and a Prima Tappa racer, but my teammate dropped back to the field.
About 40 miles into the race the race moto pulled up and started yelling "Stop racing, turn around - you're neutralized, the race is cancelled - thunderstorms are coming." It was a bit confusing, and everyone wondered what would happen. The sky did open up on us while we rode back to the race start. I'm not exactly sure what will happen with the results, but I believe the State Champion jersey and winner was the breakaway racer, and the rest of us received the same place.
I was a bit disappointed to have to stop racing, but I understand why they had to stop the race. All the racers I spoke to afterwards felt the same way, and I didn't hear anyone complain about it. Unfortunately because of the rain and low turn out I wasn't able to get very many race bike pics, but please enjoy the race video!
